Meet UO's FLTAs
For 15 years the UO and (Eugene/Springfield Communities) have benefited greatly from having Fulbright Language Teaching Assistants on campus. They allow us to offer tutoring and outreach in languages which the university otherwise wouldn’t be able to provide. This year UO has five: Dilay Eroglu (Turkey), Wafa Pathan (Pakistan), and Anupong Tuaynak (Thailand) who are affiliated with YLC, Alexsander Ferreira (Brazil) with Romance Languages, and Zulekha Khamisi (Kenya), Linguistics.
Because of their presence on campus, YLC's Self Study Language program (LT 199) is able to offer languages such as Thai, Turkish, and Urdu; Romance Languages and Linguistics offer weekly conversation hours, cultural events, and one-on-one tutoring to complement their programs in Portuguese and Swahili; and the International Cultural Service Program is able to employ them for community and educational outreach. Between their tutoring, coursework, and related duties, they're able to share their language and culture with more than 200 students and community members per term.
The FLTAs are at UO as visiting scholars, so they also take graduate courses in Language Teaching Studies, Romance Languages, Linguistics, and other related departments. We're very glad they're here and we hope you'll get to know them. If you're interested in having one of them connect with your class, fellow students or community group, please contact us.
Zully talks about her plans for introducing Swahili language and Kenyan life to the UO community.
