Getting Started with ANVILL-LTI

New: ANVILL's "media engine" has just been substantially upgraded, meaning recording and storing of your audio and video material should work much more smoothly.

What is it?
ANVILL is a web-based toolbox for language teachers, which makes it easy to create, assign, and assess spoken language. ANVILL is particularly useful for teachers looking to provide students with language practice outside of class, or in a lab setting. ANVILL foregrounds key elements of modern language lesson planning and task design: input and output tasks are connected; multimedia elements are easily added, edited, and reused; and learner output can be shared or private.

How does it work?
ANVILL is designed to work with all modern web browsers. On desktop computers, it’s optimized for use with Google Chrome and Firefox. On mobile devices it runs well on iOS, Android, and Windows Phone. As both a lesson authoring tool and a repository for recorded speech, it unifies task and production in a straightforward way.

Why the “LTI”?
ANVILL is LTI compatible. LTI stands for “learning tool interoperability” and it’s an open standard that enables ANVILL to run inside of learning management systems (LMSs) such as Moodle or Canvas.

Who can use it?
ANVILL-LTI is a web-based service of the Yamada Language Center at the University of Oregon —there's nothing to download. Like its predecessor, ANVILL-LTI is free to qualified language educators—those working in not-for-profit educational institutions around the world.

Where’s my data?
Currently, all ANVILL-LTI course materials reside on servers at the University of Oregon. ANVILL-LTI users must abide by the university's policies on acceptable IT use.

How do I get access to ANVILL-LTI?
Just go to the ANVILL home page and create an account. Documentation and screencasts are also available there.
