Yamada Center has a wide range of equipment, materials,
and facilities to
assist your study of a foreign language. Even more importantly, we
have a dedicated staff of 30 who are trained in assisting you to
use these tools. YLC is located in Pacific

The Yamada Language Center provides the following services (click for

At Yamada you can check out or buy the tapes and CDs required for many
of your language classes. Chinese, Italian, German, Russian, Spanish,
Japanese and French students can access many of their assignments on
the Virtual
Language Lab (new this year is web-based speech). In addition,
we have more than 50 computers available for multilingual word processing,
web browsing, and chatting.
Computer Lab
Want to do email in Japanese? Want to listen to your German/Spanish/Italian/French
homework online? Need to run that essay through a Spanish spellchecker?
Trying to do some video editing on your study abroad experience in Zimbabwe?

Self Study Progam
Interested in learning Swahili, Turkish, Thai, Portuguese, Cantonese,
Arabic, Farsi, Hindi, Modern Greek or Hebrew? Now's your chance! In
cooperation with the Linguistics Department, Yamada Language Center
offers self study courses during the fall, winter and spring academic
terms. An informational meeting will be held at the beginning of each
term at the Yamada Language Center. More information is available at
the Yamada Center front desk or online.

International News Shows In Languages Other Than English:
The
Yamada Language Center receives satellite TV programming from more than
thirty different countries in their original languages. These may be
viewed on the campus-wide cable system, or in our self-access facility,
Pacific 120. Select broadcasts are available for viewing on our Virtual
Language Lab (password required). Pre-recorded broadcasts
may be checked out for in-lab use from the Yamada Front Desk, Pacific
121.The current schedule of broadcast times is available online.
Language Exchange 
The Yamada Center has a free tutoring exchange program - come in or fill
out a form online.

Foreign Language and International Studies Day
Each
spring the Yamada Center brings over 2000 Oregon high school students
and their teachers to the UO campus to participate in a wide range of
events promoting and celebrating foreign languages and the study of other
cultures. Participation by UO students and faculty is always needed and
welcome. Please sign up to give a presentation or to volunteer to help
during this amazing event. Find
