Hebrew-Related Computing Sites:
- Hebrew on the Net
- For definitive information about reading and writing Hebrew over the
internet, this is the place to start. You'll find information about
Hebrew fonts, Hebrew in HTML documents, news groups, e-mail, text editors,
and more. The site is maintained by Snunit,
a project at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. They construct educational
sites on the Internet (in Hebrew) and develop online courses for colleges
and universities.
- SIL Hebrew
Font System - For a simple, elegant, and free way of typing voweled
Hebrew, check out this font system. The package is available for both
the Windows and Macintosh systems, and it includes the fonts, a system
extension to handle the vowels, and detailed instructions. The font
was developed by the Summer Institute
of Linguistics
- Mikhtav
- Information about communication on the internet is available from
Mikhtav, a group that exchanges e-mail in Hebrew. Their web site offers
specific instructions for Macintosh,
Windows,
DOS,
and UNIX
users.
- Reading Hebrew
on the Web - Step by step instructions on viewing Hebrew using Netscape
on a PC. The article is slightly outdated, but still useful.
- The Hebrew Software
Page - You won't find many Macintosh files here, but you can get
screen savers, fonts, and word processing programs for your PC. They
also sell a platic cover that fits on top of your keyboard to show you
where the Hebrew letters are located. The site is maintained by Right
to Left Software, a Canadian software company.
- PANERGY - Macintosh users
may want to check out this site. PANERGY is a small Israeli company,
but they make some nice fonts and text-editing programs.
- Babylon (electronic translation)
- Babylon is an interesting (and free) electronic translation program
that goes through the text on your computer screen and translates between
English and Hebrew. You can use it while you're reading e-mail, viewing
web pages, or writing a text document. The Babylon software is currently
only available for the PC, but they have a web site where any visitors
can type in words and get the translation. (You will need to be using
an internet-capable font such as NeText to read the Hebrew.)
- FoundationStone -
free application and support materials designed to facilitate learning
of it's 4000 word Hebrew vocabulary. "Online Hebrew Tutorial" is available
as part of the download - a condensed set of language lessons for learning
