Gothic 1 Regular
![[font sample]](samples/gothic.gif)
- This TrueType Gothic font was created by Boudewijn Rempt after the
alphabet devised by the Visigothic Bishop Wulfila (Lat. Ulfilas), 311-383
AD, for his translation of the Bible into Gothic, the so-called Codex
Argenteus, written in this alphabet with silver and gold letters on
purple parchment. This is the earliest translation of the Bible into
a Germanic language and invaluable for the history of the Germanic languages.
For more on the alphabet see James W. Marchand, the Sounds and Phonemes
of Wulfila's Gothic (1973). [Thanks to Helmut Plant for this description.]
Kroebern
![[font sample]](samples/kroebern.gif)
- Old German font from a village of the same name in the Mecklenburg-Schwerin
area. Used for record keeping in the seventeen and eighteen hundreds.
Fully equipped German character set, but very idiosyncratic (it's someone's
handwriting). Available as a PostScript and bitmapped font.
Luftwaffe

- This type of Fraktur [the word is derived from the angular, "fractured"
lines of the glyphs] is known as "fette" (i.e "bold" style) Fraktur.
A Version of this letter-type was used in German books and periodicals
until about 1940. The Amish in the US use it still today in their German
printed works. [Thanks to Helmut Plant for this description.]
