  • My fonts won't unstuff

All of our Macintosh fonts are stuffed and then binhexed (Our Windows fonts are .zip'd). For Macintosh fonts, we have StuffitLite (a shareware program) available to do the decompressing for you.

Quick review - .zip means Windows. Macintosh fonts are marked both by the .hqx designation and a Macintosh icon.

    What is this .zip thing?

All of our Windows/DOS fonts are stored as .zip files. In order to use the Windows/DOS font files here, you must have a utility to convert them to usable files. If you do not have a utility to unzip these files you may download the following shareware utilities: Download the file and then execute it. Read the instructions contained for information on how to use the program.

Quick review - .hqx and .sit are signs that you are looking at a Macintosh font. Windows fonts are marked both by the .zip designation and a Windows icon.

We apologize for not having all fonts in both formats. We are presently trying to expand our collection. If you come across freeware or shareware fonts that you find useful, or if you have created your own and would like to submit them to our archives, please email us: ylchelp@darkwing.uoregon.edu. We'd appreciate your help!

I downloaded the fonts, but now I don't know what to do.

Windows users must unzip the file they download from us. Use pkunzip or winzip or Aladdin Expander to do this. See the question about .zip files.

Mac users must unstuff the fonts. We are now storing our Mac fonts as .sit files and then binHexing them, so you will need Stuffit Expander to decode them. The utility is free from Aladdin Systems' website.

Check out our mac font help file for information on installing the Macintosh fonts.

For help on Windows font installation, see our Windows font help file.

I see you have a font for xyz language for the abc computer, do you have it for my computer too?

If it's not in our archive, we don't have one. But, some fonts are convertable from one format to another, others are not. True Type fonts are convertable and for the brave of heart, we have gathered together some font conversion programs on the Font Conversion FAQ page.

Do you have a font for xyz language?

No, probably not. If it's not in our archive, we don't have one. Nevertheless there is some lag time between our receiving fonts, and getting them on the WWW. So keep checking, we find new fonts all the time.

    Unanswered questions?

    Before you email us...

We offer the Font Archives as a free service and unfortunately do not have paid staff to devote to technical support. As much as we'd like to help, if you email us with questions about installing and using fonts on your machine, we may not be able to get back to you with an answer.
