USB Headsets

Microsoft Livechat headset.

Computers in the Yamada Language Labs use USB headsets with built-in microphones and volume control.

Using Headsets

1. Make sure that the headphones are plugged into the computer. They are plugged into the back of the Mac monitor in a USB port (symbol USB symbol.).

2. Adjust the volume. You can do this by pressing the volume buttons on the keyboard, pressing the +/- volume buttons attached to the headset cord, using SoundSource  (SoundSource icon.), or by adjusting the slider bar after clicking the speaker icon () on the Mac's menu bar.

3. Make sure the headphones are not muted. On the headset's volume control (attached to the cord), the red light indicates that it is muted. The red light must be off for the headsets to play or record sound:

4. Make sure that the headsets are selected as the output and input audio sources. You can use SoundSource, indicated by the headphones icon (SoundSource icon.) in the upper right menu bar. Click on the headphones icon and make sure "Microsoft LiveChat LX-3000" or "Platronics Headset" is selected (indicated by the checkmark ✓). You can also adjust the volume using the slider bars in SoundSource. Make sure the volume slider bars are moved to the right:

Tips

  • When using the headsets to record your voice, such as on Voiceboard, it is a good idea to test it first to make sure the microphone is working. That way, if it is not working you do not need to repeat your entire recording. If it is not working, go through the steps outlined above and keep testing until you get a good recording.
