Greek is the longest living Indo-European language with a documented history transcending 34 centuries. It is the official language of Greece and Cyprus with at least 13 million native speakers. Greek roots are frequently used for words pertaining to science and medicine internationally. The English language also owes a great deal of credit to Greek – over 50,000 English words originate from Greek!
Modern Greek is almost completely inherited directly from Ancient Greek, but that doesn’t mean new meanings and new words haven’t arisen. In fact, Modern Greek has notable influence from Venetian, Latin and Turkish.
