Welcome to the Yamada Language Center!

The UN has named 2008 the International Year of Languages in an effort to address issues of linguistic diversity, respect for all languages, and multilingualism.

Here's an often overlooked set of statistics from an excellent new web resource, abroadview.org: *If the world were 100 people: 17 would speak Chinese: 8 would speak Hindi, 8 would speak English, 7 would speak Spanish, 4 would speak Arabic, 4 would speak Russian, 52 would speak other languages.

Looking for some summer tips to enhance your language study? Here's a nice set of reminders.

New & Noteworthy

  • Students who've taken Introduction to Spanish Theater with Professor Juan Epple will be the first to admit their acting skills leave something to be desired. But their understanding of the plays is much deeper. And so is their self-confidence. Read about Epple's course and the use of "v-pals" in French and Italian language classes in the most recent YLC Quarterly.

  • Ahlan wa Sahlan. Arabic 101-103 will be offered for the first time this summer by the World Languages Academy. Earn 15 language credits and complete a year of study in eleven weeks. Classes run 11-2:20, M-F. Contact us for more information.
  • Registration is now underway for Fall classes—the WLA will be offering two new languages with deep roots in the Pacific Northwest, Sahaptin and Norwegian. In addition, there will be first through third year courses in Arabic, Korean, Portuguese, and Swahili. See the online listings for each language, or contact us at YLC for more info.

  • ANVILL is YLC's latest tool for language teachers, and it's now ready for beta testing. ANVILL integrates essential tools for written and spoken communication, like wikis and voice-based message boards. It's also a useful course builder, especially for those trying to teach at a distance.
