Chinese Tongue-Twisters and Rhythmic Storytelling

This presentation will be a short introduction to the tradition of Chinese tongue-twisters (rao kou ling) and rhythmic story-telling (kuai ban). Students will see videos of both being performed and will have an opportunity to learn and practice some basic tongue-twisters. The history and cultural relevance of these activities will also be discussed.

Motifs in the Poetry of Omar Khayyam

Most widely known through Edward Fitzgerald's translation of his quatrains, Khayyam was one of the most celebrated and controversial 11th-century Persian poets and philosophers. Philosophical wisdom, quest for the meaning of life, determinism, and the Carpe diem philosophy are among the notable themes discussed in his poetry.

Pain and Beauty in the Art of Frida Kahlo

This presentation will emphasize Frida's bout with polio at the age of 6 and the accident she was in between a bus and a trolley car when she was 18 causing massive injuries to her collarbone, spine, pelvis and right leg. It was after this accident that she dedicated her life to painting. Besides many paintings, Frida will also be presented from photographs by great Mexican photographers like Lol Alvarez Bravo.

I plan to present on the culture of fútbol (soccer) in Spain and Latin America. The presentation will focus on the significance of the game in these areas of the world, as well as discuss the specifics of the players and positions particular to the game. We will review the vocabulary and overall cultural context of the sport that is so important in the Spanish speaking world.

Music and History of Peru

A musical narration of the millenary history of Peru. We will start with ancient legends from the Inca Empire accompanied with music of the time that will tell us the story. We will also explore different sounds and rhythms from different regions of Peru as well as its history. All the music will be live performed and the audience will be invited to perform Peruvian instruments and music.
