Arabic Language Resources

Study Abroad

UO-sponsored programs in Jordan and Oman through SIT, offer Arabic courses alongside a group of themed courses. In Jordan, the theme is modernization and social change. CASA (Center for Arabic Study Abroad) is a consortium of 25 U.S. educational institutions with programs at AUC (American University of Cairo) for students of Arabic language and culture. Two programs (summer and full year) are offered for undergraduate and graduate students (CASA also has programs for teachers and past participants) http://www.emory.edu/COLLEGE/CASA/about/index.html


Nawafir SYRIA has intensive language programs in Damascus, Syria, with the option of longer programs in Islamic studies (taught in Arabic).http://www.languageschoolsguide.com/listingsp3.cfm/listing/12076


The Quortoba Institute for Arabic Studies has language programs, mostly three months in length, in Cairo and Alexandria. http://www.qortoba.com/.


Intensive Arabic Program put on by the University of Florida and Arabic Language Institution of Fez (UF-ALIF) in Fez, Morocco is a six-week summer program and can be entered at any level. http://web.aall.ufl.edu/arabiyya/fez.html.


The Modern American Language Institute’s Arabic Program (MALI-AP) has a variety of courses in Arabic taught in two locations, both in Yemen. http://www.arabicinyemen.com/.

Internships

MERIP (Middle East Research and Information Project) has fall, spring and summer internships for the magazine Middle East Report. http://www.merip.org/misc/internships.html.


AMIDEAST is a private non-profit organization based in Washington D.C. with branches in over a dozen Arabic-speaking countries. Unpaid summer internships are available in the D.C. office. This website also has extensive listings of AMIDEAST opportunities for teaching English in other countries. http://www.amideast.org/default.htm.


Programs in the U.S.

Middlebury College has a world-famous intensive nine-week summer language program in Vermont. http://www.middlebury.edu/ls/arabic/.


OSU has recently started a ten-week (fall term) program in Tunisia focusing on the study of Arabic. http://oregonstate.edu/international/oie/study_abroad/africa.html.


San Diego State University’s LARC (Language Acquisition Resource Center) and Center for the Advancement of Distinguished Language Proficiency are offering a month-long summer program (on site) for more advanced students of Arabic. Full and partial stipends are available for this program and for continued study in Damascus. http://larcnet.sdsu.edu.


The Center for Contemporary Arab Studies, based in Georgetown University, offers a Master of Arts in Arab Studies, in a variety of subjects. Good for anyone considering a profession connected to Arab countries. CCAS offers several merit-based grants and scholarships. http://www.ccasonline.org/. The Middle East Institute (MEI) in Washington D.C. has multi-level courses in Arabic. http://www.mideasti.org/programs/programs_studies.html.


Miscellaneous

The Middle East Institute (MEI) works to promote understanding between people of different Middle Eastern countries and between the Middle East and America in part by publishing The Middle East Journal, teaching classes, and working with other like-minded organizations. http://www.mideasti.org/.


UC Berkeley’s Center for Middle Eastern Studies has information on a variety of programs which mostly benefit UC students, but also has a newsletter, information on scholarships, etc. http://ias.berkeley.edu/cmes/mission_files/index_mission.html.
