YLC Tech Talk Series

Multimedia and Language Teaching

Thursdays at Noon in Pacific 113. Bring your lunch!

Faculty are cordially invited to Thursday brownbags from 12-1 during Fall term. YLC Director Jeff Magoto will be offering informal training sessions on various aspects of multimedia and language teaching.

Each session has a topic; this term's are related to using and preparing materials for U. Wisconsin's low-cost and easy-to-use Multimedia Lesson Builder and Multimedia Annotator software.

However, there's no formal agenda, and the format and venue will be flexible enough to respond to any instructional technology or multimedia questions you may be having.

Putting it all together Nov 10

Multimedia Lesson Builder (MLB). This software has been used to construct sites ranging from the Russian Rails Project at Wisconsin, to a Turkish Language and Culture Project here at YLC. This workshop will look at those sites in depth and include a short tutorial on authoring with MLB.

Multimedia Annotator (MA) . This software allows for many ways to teach listening comprehension. Of particular note is the help and sequencing of tasks. We will author short exercises with MA.

Preparing Media. MLB and MA are Flash-based. As such they require some familiarity with video and audio compression, image manipulation, and authoring in Unicode.

Task Types in Multimedia Packages. Every authoring system has different ways of checking comprehension and promoting interaction. Today's discussion will focus on some of the more innovative ones in MLB and MA.

Putting it all together. We'll build sample sites using MLB and MA.
